Curriculum
At Kingsdown Nursery School, we follow the National Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework is a set of standards which all Early Years providers must meet to make sure children are given the optimum opportunity to progress and develop, in a safe and healthy environment.
There are 7 areas of learning and development in the EYFS
- Communication and language development
- Physical development
- Personal, social, and emotional development
- Literacy development
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Staff skilfully plan activities and experience in all areas of the curriculum, focussing on Communication and language development, Physical development and Personal, social and emotional development. These are the cornerstones of all other areas of learning.
Staff quickly establish close relationships with their children and, following children’s own interests, support their learning and development across the curriculum. We have sand, water, paint, role play areas, interactive white boards, iPads, cars, trains, dolls, jigsaws, wooden blocks and other construction equipment, reading areas where children can choose a book to look at, have a book read to them or share a book with their friends, and many more toys and resources. Much of the day is spent outside in our large playground, with its huge sandpit, climbing frame, stage and musical area, and many bikes and cars, bats and balls. Children certainly sleep well after a busy day at Kingsdown!
Prior to Covid, children had a weekly music and dance lesson with a music specialist, visits from Paramedics, Dentists, Fire Fighters and Police Officers. We are hoping to re-establish these in the near future. We also have an annual visit from Dr Stuart with his mini- beasts and snakes. We go on regular walks to the woods at the end of our road, hunting for frogspawn and tadpoles. We have annual trips out to Rand Farm Park and Sundown Adventure Land. When we go to Sundown, family members are welcome to join us.
We celebrate birthdays and festivals such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, Easter and Christmas. We have a magic show every Christmas and invite parents in to hear children singing Christmas songs.
We aim to give all of our children a very happy time at Kingsdown in a way that helps them grow and develop and prepares them for Primary School.
